Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained active.
